Your Weekly Notion News Digest ✨ Spells for Systems πŸͺ„ Issue # 18

What makes the cut (or not)

You might be wondering how I choose which articles, videos, and podcasts make it into this newsletter. This week, instead of diving deep into a specific Notion topic, let me tell you more about Spells for Systems.

Who am I to decide what's cool?

This newsletter was started in October 2024, all because of a two-week holiday in Greece. Though life, right?

When I sat down at my desk after ignoring my computer for far too long, I felt overwhelmed by the amount of Notion updates I missed. I also knew we were only a couple of weeks away from Made With Notion when even more updates would be announced.

The relaxation feeling from my holiday was ebbing away much too quickly for my liking.

This newsletter was born out of wanting to help myself first (to stay on top of the news) and to help you too because friends don't let friends feel lost in the ocean of Notion updates.

What makes the cut

To be helpful, these are the criteria I use when I decide what to include:

  1. It has to mention Notion. No need to be positive. I accept criticisms and diverging opinions because it's all part of the conversation (especially when it comes to popular Reddit threads)
  2. For YouTube videos, I'm trying my best to avoid those that masquerade as template sales videos. If it allows you to build your own or teaches you new skills, that's cool. If it's more of a promo/demo video where the backside is not explained, then it's a no.
  3. For articles, I'm starting to be more picky. I suspect a lot of them are AI-generated. How do I tell? Because there are no images or videos to explain the concept. And it's all pretty surface-level/basic info you can find via Notion Academy.
  4. I stay away from product comparison articles by competitors that I know are written for the sake of SEO, so there's little value to you.
  5. I'm also avoiding Medium articles (even though some could be good), because they're mostly behind a paywall, and I want you to be able to read what I suggest without any cost to you.

Do you have something to share?

I'm always open to suggestions and submissions for all the categories of links. If you find something that should be in here (it has to be published in the week before the newsletter), please share it with me.

What could make this better?

I'd love to know what you think of this newsletter too. What's your favourite part? Is something missing? You can share your feedback here.

πŸ—“οΈ 6 Months of Spells for Systems I can't believe this newsletter has been going on for over 6 months. And there are well over 1000 of you reading this most weeks. Thank you for being here. Over the last 6 months, here are a few things I've noticed: The speed at which Notion releases new updates has changed. Instead of an update or two per week, there seems to be a specific focus each month. In April, it was all about Notion Mail. In May, Notion AI is the big focus. The surge of AI is making...

πŸ€– Making the most of Notion AI (Official News) Following last week's big launch of Notion Mail, it's a quiet week. There are no new features, but they are starting to release weekly lessons on how to make the most of Notion AI. Find all the new Notion AI lessons here Two things I hadn't realised you can do with Notion AI include: Translating properties in a database (so you can have multiple languages in one database - useful for those who work on projects with multiple languages) Ask the AI...

πŸ’Œ You've got mail... This week's big announcement has been a long time coming. It was first announced in October at Make With Notion, has been slowly released to some users since then, and is now available to all those with a Gmail address. To keep it brief because it's a fairly big piece of the productivity puzzle being released, and maybe like me, you've had a few too many chocolate eggs or hot cross buns this weekend, and you need an easy way to get back in the routine, this whole issue...
